The founder of Overhead Door Company, C.G. Johnson in 1921 devised a garage door that was parallel to the floor when opened and above where the vehicle was parked.

His invention spawned the electric garage door opener five years later, a convenience for those unable to lift the heavy door.

Doors transitioned to galvanized metal in the 1970s because wood warped and required periodic sanding and painting. Fiberglass and composites became the material of choice for garage doors in the 1980s. Versatile products like aluminum siding made garage doors easy to match to the house color.

In 1993, the Consumer Product Safety Commission mandated that all garage door openers utilize electronic sensors and auto-reverse mechanisms to save children from being hurt. Mounted six inches from the ground, the electric-eye sensors reversed the garage door device when the light beam was interrupted. The door was also opened if it sensed anything blocking the door from closing.
